History

Tobermory appears in a 1960s Specification for the Highlands and Islands scheme with a 24-channel link to Coll. This was provided in the 1970s as a 300-channel 4 GHz system and the site formed a signficant node in the scheme with further links to Mallaig, Oban and Scarinish plus further links on 450 MHz.

The site is adjacent to a television transmitter and uses a tall version of the "Type 4A" tower and a building of the type constructed for the Highlands and Islands scheme in the early 1970s - this has received metal cladding subsequently. The four main links now operate at 6 GHz and the local connections have migrated to 18 GHz but the overall network layout appears unchanged from the 1970s.
