History

Loos was originally established around 1951 as the terminal for a link from Paris to Lille. An article in Electronique Applications No 5 (Spring 1978) comments:

"Special mention should be made of the Loos tower, near Lille, whose architecture is distinctly different: it is 60 m high and consists of a truncated conical shaft supporting an equipment room surmounted by two antenna platforms; the shaft itself contains only the staircase and the elevator."

In the context of the UK network, Loos was the end-point for the 1959 television link from London via Tolsford Hill. This developed into a high-capacity telephony route, with connections to Belgium also available from Lille.
