History
The contract for the route between St Just and Treskinnick Cross was offered to GEC in the autumn of 1976. All sites feature a similar style of tower and the standard type of building. Aerial photos show the tower at Treskinninck Cross supported on cross-shaped blocks - perhaps subsidence was considered a problem and the option to adjust the tower was provided?
The purpose of this section was initially a mystery since it was not connected to the main network until the site at Ashbury was built in the early 1980s. Treskinnick Cross, however, is close to the Widemouth Bay repeater station which was established in 1963 for the TAT-3 transatlantic cable, with existing trunk cables back to London. Other undersea cables later connected along the Cornish coast and the SHF provision may have been installed to provide additional capacity in advance.
