History

Cambret Hill is shown on the 1959 Network Map as part of an "existing or under construction" route from Carlisle to Belfast. Subsequent development seems to have followed that at Enoch Hill. BT Archives has no external photographs at present but several images of "new" STC equipment racks from 1967 (this is believed to relate to new links for colour television). Details in the Chief Engineer's Annual Reports for 1959 and 1960 suggest the three intermediate sites between Carlisle and Belfast were all equipped with the same style of tower and building. On that basis, Cambret Hill would seem to have been a near-identical twin of Ridingshill - but the subsequent history of the sites differs significantly.

The current "Type 5A" tower probably dates from the early 1970s and is cross-shaped in plan with a taller centre section. The alignment favours the "new" site at Wharrels Hill. A photo (date unknown) in the mb21 Transmission Gallery shows nine large dishes of varying types facing Wharrels Hill (none towards Riddingshill). The site was visited by Google Street View in March 2009, by which time the main dishes had been removed.

The "Type 5A" tower has lower sections either side of the taller "core". The building is of the same style as the neighbouring sites on the original 1959 route.
