History

Werfa formed part of the link between the ITV Wales studios, near Cardiff, and the transmitter at Preseli and would have been operational for the start of service in September 1962. The initial provision appears to have been via a couple of dishes on a relatively short structure but a new "standard tower" was in place by 1965, equipped with horn antennas facing Werfa and Llanllawddog. This upgrade was part of work under a November 1961 contract awarded to GEC for a 6 GHz link from Wenallt to Blaen Plwyf (BBC) and "Tall Drysch" (Preseli, IBA, located at Foel Drych), with the individual links diverging at Llanllawddog.

It is unlikely the link carried any telephony traffic before 1976 when a new site opened to serve Swansea, initially as a spur, but possibly becoming a through route in later years.

Facing appoximately west: the horn antennas face Wenallt (left) and Llanllawddog (right). The two dishes on the short tower provided a temporary link.

Two dishes have been added, but it is difficult to be certain whether these are for the new link to Swansea. The tower on the right is actually taller and part of a separate installation.

From the A4107, to the north east. At this stage two large dishes remained on opposite sides of the tower.

From west, it appears both dishes are facing in the same direction and most likely towards Swansea.
