History

Cardiff - Swansea was a short telephony link, established around 1977. Most of the history has been obtained from an item in the Post Office Electrical Engineers' Journal, January 1977. A modular "Tower 5A" structure was constructed, apparently the first to be built by Post Office staff. The article states a single 3.66 m dish was installed, for the 4 GHz band. A building of the standard type was provided.

The article does not confirm the purpose of the new radio station but it would appear to have been a way to provide additional telephony circuits between Cardiff and Swansea, using the existing sites at Wenallt and Werfa which had previously been used only for television transmitter feeds.

Maps of 1980s digital links show an SHF link between Cardiff and Swansea, extended to Camarthen. Street View images from 2009 show antennas at Swansea facing Llanllawddog and Werfa - most likely the connection to Camarthen was by cable or fibre from Llanllawddog.
